What to Bring to Your First Orangetheory Class: Complete Checklist
Walking into your first Orangetheory class can feel intimidating. One thing you can control? Being prepared. Here's exactly what to pack so you can focus on the workout, not what you forgot.
The Essentials
Cross-Training or Running Shoes
EssentialYou'll run on a treadmill, lift weights, and row โ all in one class. Cross-trainers like the Nike Metcon handle everything. If you love the tread, cushioned runners like the ASICS Nimbus work great too.
Water Bottle (Insulated)
EssentialYou'll sweat a LOT. Studios have water fountains but an insulated bottle keeps your water cold for the full hour. 32 oz is the sweet spot.
Hydro Flask 32 oz โ $45 on Amazon โSweat Towel
EssentialStudios provide small towels, but many members bring their own. You'll want it for the tread and the rower handle. Microfiber dries fast.
Gym Sweat Towel (2-Pack) โ $15 on Amazon โHeart Rate Monitor
EssentialStudios rent them for ~$10/class, but if you're joining, buying one saves money after 10 classes. The OTbeat Link works with Apple Watch too.
OTbeat Link โ $109 on Amazon โMoisture-Wicking Socks
EssentialCotton socks + sweat = blisters, especially during long tread blocks. Athletic socks with cushioned soles make a real difference.
Balega Hidden Comfort Socks โ $17 on Amazon โNice to Have
Headband or Hair Ties
Nice to HaveSweat in your eyes during an all-out tread sprint is no fun. A moisture-wicking headband keeps everything in place.
Nike Swoosh Headband โ $12 on Amazon โGym Bag
Nice to HaveStudios have cubbies in the lobby (no locks). A compact duffel with a shoe compartment keeps everything organized.
Adidas Defender IV Duffel โ $40 on Amazon โPre-Workout Drink
Nice to HaveIf you take an early morning class, a clean energy drink 20-30 minutes before can help. Look for 150-200mg caffeine without the junk.
Celsius Energy Drink (12-Pack) โ $25 on Amazon โResistance Bands
Nice to HaveGreat for warming up hips and glutes before class. Not essential but helps if you're prone to tight hip flexors.
Fit Simplify Resistance Bands (5-Pack) โ $11 on Amazon โFoam Roller
Nice to HaveKeep one in your car for post-class recovery. 5 minutes of rolling after an OTF class helps prevent soreness.
TriggerPoint GRID Foam Roller โ $35 on Amazon โGet ready for your first class

What the Studio Provides
Don't worry about packing everything โ OTF studios come equipped with:
- Lockers โ Cubbies in the lobby (bring your own lock if you want security)
- Small towels โ Available at the front desk
- Showers โ Most studios have showers with body wash and shampoo
- Hair dryers โ In the locker room
- Water fountain โ For refills
- Heart rate monitor rental โ ~$10/class if you don't own one
What NOT to Bring
- Your phone โ Leave it in your cubby. You won't need it and it'll get sweaty.
- Gloves โ Most coaches discourage them. Bare hands build grip strength for dumbbells and the rower.
- A full meal โ Eat a light snack 60-90 minutes before. OTF is high-intensity โ a heavy stomach will not feel good.
First Timer Tips
- Arrive 30 minutes early for your first class for a studio tour and equipment intro
- Wear moisture-wicking clothes โ cotton gets heavy fast. See our what to wear guide
- Don't worry about keeping up โ your first class is about learning the format, not setting PRs
